Wahl Hair Trimmer

Wahl has been manufacturing hair trimmers since 1919.  In 1911, Leo J. Wahl, the inventor, originally experimented with vibrating electromagnetic motors.  When Leo J. Wahl was in college at the University of Illinois as an engineering student, he designed a vibrating medical massager for his uncle J. Frank Wahl who began manufacturing them in Sterling, Illinois.  Leo starting selling the massagers to barbershops and in the process of selling the massagers, he recognized the need to improve barber tools.  In 1919, Leo J. Wahl applied for patents for his newly developed electromagnetic hair clipper and began manufacturing them.

In 1921, Leo J. Wahl received a patent on his new clippers and 100% of Wahl Manufacturing stock and changed the business Wahl Clipper Corporation.  To this day, Wahl Manufacturing has been producing various hair trimmers.

Andis Hair Trimmer

Andis is another hair trimmer manufacturer that has been around 90 years.  Matthew Andis used to work at Mitchell Motor Car Company in Racine, Wisconsin and left to start his own business.  John Oster and Henry Meltzer came to Andis and asked to be partners and Andis O M Manufacturing was born around 1920-21.  Andis O M Manufacturing was contracted to make hand operated non-motorized hair clippers and clipper blades.  Their partnership came to an end about a year later and the three split starting their own companies in Racine, Wisconsin.  Andis began developing electric clippers and began Andis Clipper Company which eventually turned into Andis Company.

At the time, Andis claimed that its first generation of today’s Master Clipper was smaller, faster, and delivered higher performance than any other hair trimmers.  Production of Andis hair trimmers began in the Andis family basement and the entire family helped produce the clippers.  Matthew Andis sold the clippers door to door to different barber shops in Racine, Wisconsin.

Remington Hair Trimmer

When you hear Remington it’s likely that you think of firearms.  Remington razors date back to 1937 and were originally produced by a division or Remington Rand.  The Remington Rand division was sold by Sperry Corporation in 1979 to Victor Kiam who became the new spokesman of the new Remington Products.  In 2003, battery manufacturer Rayovac purchased Remington Products and Rayovac is now Spectrum Brands.

Philips Norelco Hair Trimmer

In 1939, Philips began making electric shavers but delayed their marketing efforts until 1948 due to World War II and weren’t initially successful until they produced a two headed model in 1951.  In the early 40s, Philips used the acronym Norelco which stands for North American Philips Electrical Company because Philco, a storage and battery company was legally able to prevent them from using Philips because it sounded similar.  In 2006, people took notice to the introduction of the Philips Norelco Bodygroom shaver.  The product gained considerable attention with an online websites and a demonstration on Howard Stern’s show.

Panasonic Hair Trimmer

Panasonic has a history of manufacturing various electronic devices.  Panasonic is a Japanese company that was founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita.  There’s not much information that is readily available about how Panasonic got into producing hair trimmers.

Oster Hair Trimmer

Oster began manufacturing hair clippers in 1924 after founder John Oster decided to break away from Andis O M Manufacturing.  Their initial clippers were targeted towards cutting and styling women’s hair.  Oster diversified from barber equipment to electrical appliances after it purchased Stevens Electric.  In 1960, John Oster Manufacturing was acquired by the Sunbeam Corporation and in 1971 the company was renamed to Oster Corporation.

Braun Hair Trimmer

Braun is another hair trimmer manufacturer was a subsidiary  of Gillette from 1984-2005 and had purchased a controlling interest in 1967.  Braun is now officially owned by Proctor & Gamble which purchased Gillette in 2005.
